Our Building Is An Antique Too!
The Old Stone Mill building is an unusual architectural remnant of West Jefferson's early years of manufacturing, lumber storage and planing history. Built in 1868 and finished in 1869. It is constructed of limestone quarried nearby. The Mill was originally occupied by the E. Joy and Company Planing Mill which produced doors, shutters and sashes for the building boom of the period.
It became one of John Gregg's holdings in 1873. In the early 1880's an unusual tenant was the Embalming and Burial Case Company, which manufactured their "celebrated metallic caskets" here. Shipped all over the country, their caskets were said to ingeniously both embalm and entomb a body.
In 1937, our building was home to the Iowa Grain & Produce Company, wholesalers of "Feed Hay and Grain" where Jos L. Gafford was president, Gottlieb Stiefel was vice-president, Eugene L. Gafford was treasurer, and the phone number was 747 and 748. The third floor and a rear addition were probably added in the early 1900's.
Prior to becoming an antique mall, the building was last used as warehouse space for Turner Seed & Feed. Shortly after becoming an antique mall, the building suffered a devastating arson fire in the early 1990’s. Within a few months, the building was restored better than it was before the fire, and continues to operate as an antique mall with an average of 50-60 vendors displaying their wares.
